The RedVox Infrasound Recorder is a powerful tool for capturing sub-aural low frequency sounds, such as those produced by volcanic eruptions, sonic booms, meteors, earthquakes, tsunamis, and surf. It is designed to record and stream these sounds effortlessly, either over wifi or cellular connectivity.
With just a simple tap of the play button, the recording and streaming process begins immediately. The main display provides real-time visual representation of the recorded infrasonic pressure using the internal microphone and, if available, a barometer. Additionally, the recorder allows for external microphones to be connected via the data port or audio jack, overriding the internal microphone.
All sound files are sent anonymously to the RedVox cloud server at redvox.io, ensuring privacy and security. The app also provides information about your app version and RedVox device ID on the front page, allowing for easy identification and configuration within the settings.
One of the standout features of the RedVox Recorder is its ability to record in the background. This enables continuous monitoring of infrasound events and ambient noise. Although extended recording may consume more power, the recorder can run off its internal battery for hours with the screen turned off.
To accurately map and localize the recorded infrasound, the device's location can be saved and associated with each recording. This feature enhances the overall data analysis and exploration of infrasound phenomena.
In situations where there is no cellular or wifi connection available, the Recorder will automatically save recordings to memory and retransmit them once communication is restored, provided that the backfill setting is enabled. Additionally, communication dB levels are recorded whenever possible, offering valuable insights into recording conditions.
All recorded files are easily accessible through a directory of your choice during installation, giving you full control over your data and recordings.
It is important to note that continued use of GPS in the background may reduce battery life.
Privacy
- Access to the microphone is necessary for the app to function.
- The free version of the app supports audio only at 80 and 800 Hz.
- At 80 Hz, audio is heavily low-pass filtered below 32 Hz, ensuring that no identifiable human voices can be picked up.
- At 800 Hz, audio is heavily low-pass filtered below 320 Hz, within the bass guitar frequency range and well below the primary speech range of 1-3 kHz.
- If you choose to use a sampling rate of 8 kHz or higher with the Premium version, it is possible to record conversational audio. However, the default privacy setting for higher sample rates is private.
- The RedVox Device ID is either a truncated version of the scrambled vendor ID or user-specified in the settings. It cannot be traced back to any account or personal information.
